A Quick Look at the PTE Academic Test

The PTE Academic test is a computer-based English language proficiency exam designed to assess your speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills. The test is conducted in a single session at a secure test center, and results are typically available within 48 hours.

Part 1: Introduction and questions on familiar topics
4 to 5 minutes
Part 1 of the test will start with the examiner asking you to state your name and show your identification.
Next, you will be asked general questions about yourself such as where you live or what you are currently doing (working or studying).
You will then be asked some questions about a range of familiar topics, for example, about the music you like, cooking, the weather, or movies you prefer. You will generally be asked about one or two topics.
The examiner will ask scripted questions and will listen to your answer, prompting you to extend your response with a “why?” or “why not?” if your answer is too short.
This part of the test follows a question-answer format focusing on your ability to communicate opinions and information on everyday topics by answering a range of questions.

PTE Speaking (27–38 minutes)
The PTE Speaking test is designed to assess your spoken English skills through a computer-based exam. You will speak into a microphone, and your responses will be recorded and assessed using AI technology.
There are five main tasks in the Speaking section:
Read Aloud – Read a given text aloud within a time limit.
Repeat Sentence – Listen to a sentence and repeat it exactly.
Describe Image – Look at an image and describe its details.
Re-tell Lecture – Listen to a lecture and summarize it in your own words.
